Roger Federer defeated Andy Murray in four sets in the 2012 Wimbledon Final and regained the world number-one ranking in the process. He beat Pete Sampras’ record of 286 weeks atop the world rankings. 

Roger Federer beat Andy Murray 4–6, 7–5, 6–3, 6–4 to lift the Wimbledon Championship. England’s hope was riding on Andy Murray who is Britain’s number 1 player and who became the only British player to reach the Wimbledon men's singles final in the Open Era.
