TRANSCRIPT OF THE CHAT

nanikanna: hi sir gud evening
can u post me a sample paper so that we can estimate the paper pattern
Gaurav Dave: The sample paper on the lines of NMAT 2012 should be on our website in the coming week. We will surely keep you posted on the same!
vamsi2531: hi sir,
how to prepare for NMAT
is it as same as CAT or differ??
Gaurav Dave: If you are preparing the theory material for CAT, then you would have covered roughly 75-80% of the material required for NMAT. This is not because NMAT has a wider scope but because the questions types are different. What you should is to prepare for the CAT theory right now and when there is a month or so left for NMAT, you should take a mock NMAT to identify the question types, your strengths and weaknesses etc. Based on that, you should practice a few chapters where you would encounter questions types differing from CAt
nanikanna: wat will be the course fees for mba
Gaurav Dave: The course fees at NMIMS wouls depend on whether you are doing an MBA or a PGDM. My suggestion would be that you check the courseware fees directly from the NMIMS website
vamsi2531: is it easy to get admission after clearing the test??
Gaurav Dave: If you have cleared the test, you will have to attempt a case study analysis followed by an interview. Provided you prepare systematically for both, it should not be difficult to get through!
jubin1989: Hi sir,i would like to know what all topics are there in nmat in addition to cat to study like visual reasoning etc...
Gaurav Dave: The major difference between NMAT and CAT is more in terms of its reasoning section. The question types in NMAT (in reasoning) are more in line with questions that you would have seen in earlier MHCET papers. Also, the Quant as well as Verbal questions in NMAT are slightly simpler compared to CAT
myth112: Hi sir ,In NMAT which are the area that need more focus or attention ?
Gaurav Dave: In NMAT, the focus area will vary from section to section. In Quant, the focus area has to be Arithmetic and Modern Maths compared to CAT where Algebra and Numbers is more important. In LR, focus more on question types such as Relationships, Arrangements, Coding, i/p-o/p tracing etc. For Verbal, focus on RC, grammar and lot of critical reasoning
bhanutiw20: heelo sir
how to prepare for NMAT ?
Gaurav Dave: Assuming that you are preparing for CAT along with NMAT, my suggestion would be that you should work on the theory right now without laying special emphasis on NMAT. When you have nearly a month left for NMAT, you should attempt a couple of mock NMATs and then compare the question types there with the question types in a mock CAT. This will tell you the areas that you separately need to revise. Apart from that, also look at areas where you feel you are strong or weak and accordingly revise. Try to attempt at least 4 mock NMATs before your actual exam.
jubin1989: Also i wud like to know weder the mgmt quota is scrapped diis yr or nt so dat total seats will be in general quota...anny thgts..
Gaurav Dave: As far as we know, the management quota still exists. However, the best people to answer these would be the management at NMIMS or students currently studying there.
akchhaya7: hello sir, what is the difficulty level of NMAT compared to CAT ??
Gaurav Dave: Generally, NMAT is simpler compared to CAT. However, this may vary based on your slot and year. For instance, I found NMAT as tough as CAT in 2010 and much simpler than CAT in 2011. So, various people would have found it tougher/simpler based on the slot. However, in general, NMAT is considered to be simpler than CAT
nanikanna: difficulty level of paper sir
Gaurav Dave: NMAT is general a simple exam. It is considered to be simpler than CAT. However, the difficulty level keeps on changing from slot to slot and year to year
nanikanna: 1.need paper pattern
2.fees
3.nmat vs cat
Gaurav Dave: While the exact paper pattern cannot be disclosed because of the non-disclosure agreement, we would suggest you have a look at our free test which we upload next week. This will be on the lines of last year's NMAT. The fess for the entrance are Rs. 1650 if you are applying for either the MBA or PGDM course and RS 2000 if you are applying to both. Finally, NMAT is simpler than CAT. The overall areas where the focus of NMAT is different is that NMAT focuses more on Arithmetic compared to CAT and its reasoning is quite different from CAT. Also, it will have quite a few Critical Reasoning questions
nanikanna: and mainly how many people attempted name last year and how many have been shortlisted for interview and finally selected
Gaurav Dave: Roughly 50000 people would have attempted NMAT last year. Also, the number of people called for the GDPI round would be in the ratio 7:1.
akchhaya7: good evening sir.. how to prepare for NMAT ?
Gaurav Dave: Assuming that you are preparing for CAT along with NMAT, my suggestion would be that you should work on the theory right now without laying special emphasis on NMAT. When you have nearly a month left for NMAT, you should attempt a couple of mock NMATs and then compare the question types there with the question types in a mock CAT. This will tell you the areas that you separately need to revise. Apart from that, also look at areas where you feel you are strong or weak and accordingly revise. Try to attempt at least 4 mock NMATs before your actual exam. Also, considering that you are allowed to select the section order in NMAT, identify which section you want to attempt first, which do you want to attempt second and which do you want to attempt last.
onkarhande1987: Hello Sir,
What was the previous year's cut-off for NMAT?
Gaurav Dave: The cut-off for the Mumbai campus was around 210 while for the Bengaluru and Hyderabad campus, it was quite lower.
jubin1989: I wud like to knw abt d placemwmts for dis yr at hyd and bang campus....
Gaurav Dave: The best people to answer placement queries people who are currently studying there. They generally have the most accurate data in terms of what companies come there, what are the kind of profile offered, the conditions required to apply to those companies and so on. I would suggest that you check with someone studying there for placements.
akchhaya7: how is geometry in NMAT ?? Easy or Difficult ?? dis is my weak point..
Gaurav Dave: The good news for you is that Geometry is not one of the majot testing areas in NMAT. You will have an occasional question from Trigonometry or Mensuration, but the major focus has been seen to be Arithmetic and Modern Maths. However, i would suggest that you at least have a fundamental grasp of Geometry basics to ensure that you don't struggle in a worst case scenario.
akchhaya7: Sir, How is Geometry in NMAT? is it easy or difficult ??
Gaurav Dave: The good news for you is that Geometry is not one of the majot testing areas in NMAT. You will have an occasional question from Trigonometry or Mensuration, but the major focus has been seen to be Arithmetic and Modern Maths. However, i would suggest that you at least have a fundamental grasp of Geometry basics to ensure that you don't struggle in a worst case scenario.
nanikanna: books for preparing nmat and last year cutoff marks for nmat
Gaurav Dave: The cut-off for NMAT last years was 210 for the Mumbai campus. For NMAT, you can refer to any CAT theory material. However, you should also attempt 4-5 mock NMATs to get a feel of the actual paper.
shonk: Hi Gaurav Sir, There is still a confusion that whether there is a negative marking in NMAT or not ? As there had been rumors that there is a hidden negative marking after a number of wrong questions done. Please clarify on that.
Gaurav Dave: As per the announcement by the NMIMS and Pearson authorities, NMAT does NOT have negative marking. A number of people have come up with a number of theories on this, but our recommendation is that you go as per the official announcement and prepare as if the exam has no negative marking.
RAUSHANBHARDWAJ: Hi , goodevening whats the diffrence between MAT and NMAT?
Gaurav Dave: NMAT is an exam conducted by Narsee Monjee for admission to its MBA programme in Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru while MAT is an exam conducted by AIMA for admission to more than 100 different colleges all across India.
RAUSHANBHARDWAJ: SIR JAWAB DIJIYE SIR
Gaurav Dave: Hey..i have just answered your question below. Just check that out.
abhivinu: what do u suggest we should do in nmim pgdm or mba
Gaurav Dave: The course in Mumbai is called the MBA course while those in Hyderabad and Bengaluru are called the PGDM courses. Since the Mumbai campus is the most well known, currently the MBA course is the more preferred one.
tiny.ak1: Hi, I would like to know how to effectively prepare for the case studies or essay writing sections?
Gaurav Dave: That can be done only through practice and by being updated on stuff around you by reading a lot. However, right now, my opinion would be that focus on the written test. The essay and case study can be tackled later.
yawi16: hi sir
how much does narsee-monjee give weightage to nmat?
I don't have a very good profile, so what are the chances of getting through if I score good in nmat?
Gaurav Dave: Narsee Monjee will consider only your NMAT will calling you for the interview. During your interview, your overall profile may be considered.
shonk: Hi Sir waiting for your reply to my Questions .
Gaurav Dave: Hi ..I have answered your earlier question. Please check it out.
RAUSHANBHARDWAJ: WHATS THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF STUDENTS APPEARING EVERY YEAR FOR NMAT?
Gaurav Dave: last year, the number of students who appeared for NMAT was approximately 50000 out of which roughly 7000 were called for the GDPI round.
tiny.ak1: Hi, I asked you earlier that what should be the preparation strategy for case studies and essay writing. Kindly, answer.
Gaurav Dave: Hi... I have already answered your question below. Please check it out.
pawan18: hello Sir,On which section that need more attention ?
Gaurav Dave: You need to do equally well in all three sections. Which section needs most attention depends on where you are weak and where you are strong. However, going strictly by the number of questions per section, QA cannot be ignored.
bhanutiw20: which campus is best around mumbai bangluru & hyderabad
?
Gaurav Dave: Among the campuses of NMIMS, Mumbai is considered to be the best campus.
RAUSHANBHARDWAJ: SORRY WAS LOOKING AT A WRONG PLACE FOR MY ANSWERS... AAP PLZZ BATAYENGE K LAGBHAG KITNE LOG APPEAR HOTE HAI NMAT ME HAR SAAL AUR KITNE SELECT HOTE HAI?
Gaurav Dave: Roughly 50000-55000 people attempt NMAT every year.
jibin_13: best of 3 scores?
could you throw some light on the same?
Gaurav Dave: Sure...you can take up to a maximum of 3 attempts. If you get a score of 202, 208 and 212 in your three attempt, then 212 is considered as your final score. Also, there is no normalization between scores.
nanikanna: i need total marks or maximum marks and marks alloted for each section sir
Gaurav Dave: NMAT does not announce the marks allotted to each section. However, based on previous experience, the marks per question are +3 and the negative marks per question are -1
nanikanna: u have not answered my questins till now....
Gaurav Dave: Hi. I have answered your questions. Please check them out.
anshuman17: What is the placement scenario of B'lore and Hyderabad campuses?
Gaurav Dave: The best people to answer placement questions are people studying at those campuses. However, it can be safely said that the placement scenario at the two campuses outside Mumbai is not as good as that of the Mumbai campus.
akchhaya7: will material from Testfunda on Modern Maths and Arithmatic suffice?
Gaurav Dave: Yes, the QA material of TestFunda along with our mocks will suffice for NMAT
abhi.1992: sir plz tell, are the distance learning students eligible to give nmat?
Gaurav Dave: As far as i KNow, distance learning students are not eligible to take NMAT
nanikanna: 1.what are the maximum marks and marks alloted to each section sir....??/
Gaurav Dave: as I mentioned earlier, the maximum marks alloted to each section are not officially announced as there is some amount of normalization that happens on every online exam
nanikanna: 1.what are the total marks and maximum marks alloted to each section sir because you didn,t suggest what are the maximum marks...
Gaurav Dave: as I mentioned earlier, the maximum marks allotted to each section are not officially announced as there is some amount of normalization that happens on every online exam
nanikanna: 1.what are the total marks and maximum marks alloted to each section sir because you didn,t suggest what are the maximum marks...

sameerkaushik12: i sir, last year i gave my NMAT. my score was 202. The problem was the number of questions. Can you please tell something in increasing my score this time
Gaurav Dave: How many question did you attempt last year? YOu will first need to tell me that. However, the key thing to attempt more questions is to identify the questions that you feel are the simplest. Try and spend a couple of minutes per section identifying the simplest questions. Also, never get stuck on a single question for more than 2-3 minutes. If that happens, leave the question for the time being.
jibin_13: my original question remains unanswered. :(
but never mind.
Gaurav Dave: Hey sorry...can you just repeat your question. I must have missed it out. I'll try and answer it right away. :-)
RAUSHANBHARDWAJ: LAST QUESTION SIR PLZZ ISKA JAWAB DE DIJIYE....BAHOT MUSHKIL HAI SIR... :( PLZZ KUCH BATAIYE NA K NIKAL JAYE 1 MAHINA ME KYA PADH LU K HO JAYE? WAISE YE MERA PAHLA MBA ENTRANCE EXAM HOGA
Gaurav Dave: You will need to focus on CAT theory right now. When you have a month left for NMAT, attempt a couple of mock NMATs and identify question types that are not common to CAT. Try and revise those question types. Then identify question types where you are strong and weak and revise them accordingly.
jibin_13: was expecting some clarity as to how the applications would pan out?
do we fill up the details of all the 3 attempt dates while enrolling for NMAT?
do we need to pay 1650 for every attempt?
does the other 2 scores have any bearing on the overall performance in the entrance exams?
Gaurav Dave: No..you do not need to mention the date of all three attempts when you first fill the application form. After the first attempt, if you feel that your score will not be as expected, then you can apply for the second attempt. However, you need th fees again. If you attempt the exam thrice, the best of 3 scores is taken. If you attempt it once, only that score is taken.
anupam24: Sir, is there individual cut off for each section ?
Gaurav Dave: Yes..they are..but the exact cut-offs are never announced.
mayuknag: Sir can you please tell me the important topics need to be covered in all the 3 sections so that i can get a good score,,... plzz rply soon..
Gaurav Dave: In Qa, cover Arithmetic and Modern Maths. In Reasoning, cover stuiff such as directions, relationships, critical reasoning, arrangements and codes. For Verbal, cover RC, grammar and critical reasoning along with vocab
rajat241191: Is negative marking is applicable in NMAT?
Gaurav Dave: There is no negative marking in NMAt
dani.hakimsaif: sir according to you the average marks needed for cut off just average
Gaurav Dave: Try and score at least 200 in each attempt to be reasonably sure of a call.
sahils.vora: sir...which should be taken first CAt/nmat... how much should be the gap between CAT slot and NMAT slot...wrt the TIME REQ FOR PREP OF NMAT
Gaurav Dave: You can take either CAT or NMAT first. However, irrespective of which exam you take first, keep a gap of at least 5-6 days between the two to rest and recharge yourself for the next exam.
jibin_13: thanks a ton!
cheers :)
Gaurav Dave: welcome
mayuknag: Sir can you please tell me the important topics need to be covered in all the 3 sections so that i can get a good score,,... plzz rply soon..
Gaurav Dave: Hey..I have already answered your question earlier. Please check my response there. :-)
mayuknag: Sir can you please tell me the important topics need to be covered in all the 3 sections so that i can get a good score,,... plzz rply soon..
Gaurav Dave: Hey..I have already answered your question earlier. Please check my response there. :-)
dani.hakimsaif: what marks are there for correct answer?
Gaurav Dave: Generally, that is not announce, but student feedback is that 3 marks are given for a right answer.
rajat241191: If negative marking is no applicable..so why did u post this??

Gaurav Dave: NMAT does not announce the marks allotted to each section. However, based on previous experience, the marks per question are +3 and the negative marks per question are -1
Gaurav Dave: Sorry...i meant +3 and 0...ooops
pawan18: thank u sir :)
Gaurav Dave: welcome
tiny.ak1: Thank you for clearing all the doubts :)
Gaurav Dave: welcome
RAUSHANBHARDWAJ: NOW WHAT DO U MEAN BY CAT THEORY?
Gaurav Dave: What i mean by CAT theory is that whatever theory material you have been referring for the other exams such as CAT, MAT, XAT etc is also sufficient for NMAT
dani.hakimsaif: sir, the branch are given on the basis of gd pi only ?
Gaurav Dave: If you mean PGDM or MBA, then that depends on what you have filled in the application form.
rajat241191: ok sir..so worries
thnx
Gaurav Dave: welcome
RAUSHANBHARDWAJ: OK THANKS A LOT FOR TAKING PAIN OF ANSWERING MY QUESTIONS..:-) TC
Gaurav Dave: welcome
anupam24: Sir, what should be the correct order of section in NMAT? (considering I am equally good in all three sections)
Gaurav Dave: There is no fixed order, but you should try to attempt different ,mocks in different orders to get an idea of which orders suits you the most.
dani.hakimsaif: no sir means that i want to do mba in capital markets so i will get it on the basis of gd pi or nmat marks will alos matter
Gaurav Dave: No...your NMAT marks will also matter there.
dani.hakimsaif: sir, the branch are given on the basis of gd pi only ?
Gaurav Dave: question already answered
yawi16: sir my second question is unananswered.

Would you suggest fillin for both pgdm and mba courses?
Gaurav Dave: If you want to go for NMIMS Mumbai, go for MBA. If you are fine with either campus, go for both.
Noopur231: sir pls respond

Hi sir.. I have just started with the preperation. I am very weak at verbal section , okaiyish at Quant and fine with DI & DS. I am ready to put in any amount of effort but since i am doing self study it will be great if you can give me guidance how to go for it.
Gaurav Dave: You will need to focus on two aspects - RC and basics of grammar. ALso, the key in NMAT will be to selct the right questions. For each section, try and spend a couple of minutes finding the easiest questions and attempt them first.
