SBI PO MAINS 2016 ANALYSIS

The State Bank of India Probationary Officer Mains exam was held in the online format on 31st July, 2016.
The Main exam has two tests:
1. Objective Test for 200 marks 
2. Descriptive Test for 50 marks.

  • OBJECTIVE TEST:
The exam comprised 155 questions to be answered in 3 hours, spread over four sections.
  1. General / Financial Awareness
  2. English Language
  3. Data Analysis and Interpretation
  4. Reasoning Ability and Computer Aptitude
Unlike last year, this year SBI introduced new pattern of paper with sectional timing. It reflects on the overall difficulty level of the exam. Overall paper was difficult and students were surprised by the pattern of paper. Since, there was different weightage for different questions; the overall difficulty level of exam increased drastically. The purpose behind this may have been to increase/decrease the comparative importance level of certain section.

Let us analyze each section separately. 

1. Data Analysis and Interpretation:

This section comprised 35 questions for 60 marks, to be completed in 60 minutes. The difficulty level of this section was high as the questions were tough and time consuming. Break up by question type is as shown below:

The good attempts for DI section were 19 to 21 questions.

2. Reasoning Ability and Computer Aptitude:

This section comprised 45 questions for 60 marks, to be completed in 60 minutes. Though the section was named Reasoning ability and Computer Aptitude, there were zero questions on computers. This would have affected a student’s question attempt strategy. The difficulty level of this section was Moderate to Difficult. 
While SBI PO Prelim typically has lot of puzzles, SBI PO Mains puts emphasis on other topics as well. The table shown below gives exact analysis of section:

The good attempts for this section were 27 to 29 questions.

3. English Language:

The English Language section comprised 35 questions for 40 marks in 40 minutes.
This section gave the biggest surprise in terms of pattern. Common question types such as cloze Test, Para Jumbles and spot the error were omitted, while new question type such as Statement fillers, Separate questions on Antonyms and Synonyms appeared this year. This increased the difficulty level of the section. The break up of the section is as shown below:

The good attempts for English Language section were 17 to 21 questions.

4. General / Financial Awareness:

In this section each question carried one mark. There were 40 questions and time allotted was 35 minutes. The section mainly emphasised on Banking Awareness and Current affairs Compared to SBI Clerical Mains, there were fewer static questions in SBI PO Mains exam. The overall difficulty level for this section was Easy to Moderate. This section can be used as a scoring section as student can easily attempt 26 to 29 questions.

The Overall good attempts: 95 to 100.

  • DESCRIPTIVE TEST:

Descriptive Test consists of two types of questions i.e. Letter Writing and Essay Writing.

The topics asked for Letter writing: 

1. Write a letter as a principal to the parents to tell them about the importance of parents in children education.
2. Write a letter to news editor to tell them about menace about selfie.
3. You have to write a letter to your parents to tell them about your success in your job and new life in new city.

The topics asked for Essay Writing:

1. Importance of knowing history for a citizen
2. Effect of the New Game Pokemon GO.
3. Effect of Salary Increase on Economy 

  • Final Verdict:
The overall exam was tough. Result will be announced on August 16, 2016
