Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Germany's former foreign minister, has been elected as the country's new president, the 12th person to hold the largely ceremonial post in the post-war era. Steinmeier on Sunday won 931 out of 1,260 valid votes cast by the members of the Federal Assembly, which is made up of 630 federal members of parliament and an equal number of delegates from 16 states.

Malaysian police detained a woman holding Vietnam travel papers and are looking for a "few" other foreign suspects in connection with the assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's estranged half-brother, police said. Lawmakers in South Korea had earlier cited their spy agency as saying it suspected two female North Korean agents had murdered Kim Jong Nam, and US government sources also told Reuters they believed North Korean assassins were responsible.

A triumphant China on Friday welcomed US President Donald Trump's climbdown on the 'One China' policy during his telephonic call with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping but parried questions on whether his change of stand was part of any concessions made by Beijing. "One China principle is the political foundation of China-US relationship and to uphold it and abide by it based on previous communiques between the two countries is the obligation of the US government. It is also the long standing position held by China," Chinese Foreign Ministry's spokesman, Lu Kang, told media soon after Trump and Xi's conversation.

The Supreme Court today declined to give more time to AIADMK General Secretary VK Sasikala to surrender, saying that the judgement was clear that she needed to surrender immediately. "We do not intend to pass any order on this. We are not going to change anything in the judgement," a bench headed by Justice P C Ghose said.
Isro creates history, launches 104 satellites in one go

India scripted a new chapter in the history of space exploration on Wednesday with the successful launch of a record 104 satellites+ by Isro's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) in a single mission. PSLV-C37 carrying the 104 satellites lifted off from the first launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota at 9.28am. It was PSLV's 39th flight.
