Isro successfully places remote sensing satellite Resourcesat-2A in orbit

Indian Space Research Organisation, which is basking in the glory of consecutive successful launches, on Wednesday successfully placed remote sensing satellite Resourcesat-2A in the orbit. A Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle -- PSLV-C36 -carrying 1.2-tonne Resourcesat-2A lifted off from the first launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, situated around 100km from Chennai, at 10.25am. Isro used an XL version of the rocket in PSLV's 38th flight. In 18 years from 1994 to 2016, PSLV has seen 36 successful launches, placing 121 satellites including 79 from abroad.
Bernard Cazeneuve named new French Prime Minister

Bernard Cazeneuve, currently French interior minister, will replace Manuel Valls as the country's new prime minister, President Francois Hollande's office said on Tuesday. "He's a strong personality, with experience of state affairs," said a source in the president's entourage, commenting on Cazeneuve's appointment. Valls is stepping down in order to seek the Socialist Party's nomination to be its presidential candidate in the 2017 election.

Fake US embassy in Ghana shut down

A fake US embassy that operated for "about a decade" in Ghana's capital issuing counterfeit and fraudulently obtained visas has been shut down, the US State Department announced. The scam was orchestrated by "Ghanaian and Turkish organized crime rings" and a Ghanaian attorney, a statement said. Several suspects have been arrested, though others remain at large.
Jayalalithaa declared dead close to midnight after 75 days in hospital

After an uncertainty-filled 75 days in hospital, and a tense final 24 hours, Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa, Amma to millions of Tamils and godmother to legions of AIADMK cadres, was declared dead close to midnight of Monday by Apollo Hospitals. She was 68. A popular and prolific filmstar, Jayalalithaa went on to become a four-term and six-time chief minister — she had to step down in 2001 and 2014 following court judgments+ in corruption-related cases, but was subsequently acquitted and re-instated. She is only the second CM in almost 30 years, besides J&K's Mufti, to die of natural causes while still in office.
Ottakkara Panneerselvam sworn in as new Tamil Nadu CM

With her passing, the question is whether the AIADMK will repose the same faith in Ottakkara Panneerselvam, who took over her duties after her hospitalisation. Shortly after the announcement about CM J Jayalalithaa passing away, finance minister O Panneerselvam was sworn in as CM by Governor Vidyasagar Rao at Raj Bhavan. Earlier, AIADMK MLAs elected OPS as legislature party leader at a meeting held at the party headquarters in the city. The party MLAs arrived at Raj Bhavan around 12.40am for the brief ceremony held in a grim and sombre atmosphere.

Uzbekistan elects Shavkat Mirziyoyev as president
